City for citizens, citizens for city is an international project aimed at encouraging civic engagement and volunteerism. It would like to demonstrate that it is possible to create meaningful relations between citizens, civil society organizations and municipalities through reciprocity, dialog and cooperation. The main aim of the project is to prove that bottom-up approach works and active citizens are capable of making the municipalities accountable.
The project is realized as cooperation between various civil society organizations (CSOs) or local initiatives and municipalities in Albania, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Slovakia.
We believe that engagement in the local government issues matters and may initiate important changes therefore we either provide the tools for the citizens to get engaged easily (such as the web portals Odkazprestarostu.sk in Slovakia and Chodcisobe.cz in Prague, the Czech Republic) or encourage the citizens to intervene in the public spaces (such as creation of the bus stop from recycling materials by Co-PLAN).
We believe that volunteerism is beneficial for the whole society. For volunteers if they are given due attention and leadership it is a lifelong learning opportunity, which may help them develop or improve their personal, social and professional skills. Given the high rate of youth unemployment volunteerism is an opportunity to improve the labor market position. For local governments, continual and systematic work with volunteers is a way to improve the relations with citizens, strengthen sense of community and civic identity, and enhance mutual tolerance and understanding. Volunteerism and any other form of civic engagement contributes to social cohesion and inclusion since it brings together different people from different social strata.
Our joint project City for citizens, citizens for city consists of several public discusssions and volunteering events in Bratislava, Prague, Siret, Tirana, and Vulcan. Several urban interventions as one of the results of the project were presented in Bratislava in March 2014.
The project is realized thanks to the support of the Europe for Citizens Programme.
